FAQ’s & SEPTIC SYSTEM INFORMATION
What is an aerobic system?
An aerobic system is one in which air is used in the operation of the system, an Aerobic Waste Water Treatment System (AWWTS). This name distinguishes it from an anaerobic or Septic Tank System. AWWTS introduce air by way of fine bubbles into the water under treatment in the tank. Oxygen dissolves into the water and minute bacteria living in the polluted water use this oxygen to live.
Which is the best system?
The best system is different for different people/situations. We use and recommend Taylex™(see our Services page)
Do systems need to be serviced and what is the cost?
All AWWTS in South Australia need to be serviced Quarterly i.e. every 3 months to comply with State Law & Local Government Statutory Requirements. Regular servicing keeps the system running correctly and safely for all members of the household.
For those people who are concerned about the cost of servicing an AWWTS remember – if you were connected to mains sewer, part of your rates would cover sewage, but the benefit with AWWTS means you pay for water once and use it twice!
Who can service a Treatment Plant? Why do they need to be serviced?
Unlicensed personnel are not allowed to service any treatment system anywhere in Australia by State Law. Your service technician is fully licensed & trained and will service your AWWTS quarterly to ensure that it is operating at peak performance, producing water that is returning to the environment as the cleanest and best quality.
Do I need to use special cleaning products?
Some cleaning products can be harmful as they destroy healthy bacteria needed to breakdown the effluent. Use products that are biodegradable, septic tank safe and do not contain antibacterial agents, bleach or chlorine. PLEASE REFER TO CLEANING PRODUCTS INFORMATION.
Can I turn the system off when I go on holidays?
Just as you don’t turn off the aerator in the gold fish bowl or turn the power off to the refrigerator or freezer, you do not turn off the power to the AWWTS. The bacteria are naturally regulating and will quickly multiply as soon as more food matter is available on your return.

SEPTIC SYSTEM INFORMATION
All septic systems are a living process. They rely on bacteria to break down & digest the effluent so a HEALTHY septic system has lots of HEALTHY bacteria. If you use strong cleaning products as listed below, you will reduce or completely destroy the bacteria in your system. This will result in:
- Strong odours
- Untreated effluent pooling on the surface creating a health hazard
- Shortening pump life in the system
- Clogging & shutting down of soakage trenches causing effluent to back up to the surface or into the house.
RECTIFICATION CAN BE AN EXPENSIVE EXERCISE
CLEANING PRODUCTS INFORMATION
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL – Any product that kills germs (bacteria) will kill the septic system
Don’t use Antibacterial Products – e.g. Vanish, Preen, Milton, Toilet Blue
Don’t use Bleaches – e.g. Domestos, White King
Don’t use Harsh Cleaners – e.g. Oven Cleaners, Exit Mould, Ajax
Don’t put Paints, sanitary products (nappy wipes, tampons, napkins, condoms), cigarette butts, cooking oils and fat in your system.
DO USE BIO DEGRADABLE PRODUCTS WHICH ARE SODIUM & PHOSPHOROUS FREE
If stronger products need to be used, wipe over area with cloths then rinse cloths in a bucket and discard the contents in the garden. DO NOT pour down the drain.
REMEMBER every drain & basin in the house is connected to the septic system. Leaking taps or storm water entering the system can dilute the bacteria as can doing a lot of washing in one day. Try and spread the washing over the week.
IF YOU FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES YOUR SEPTIC WILL SERVICE YOU WELL FOR MANY YEARS. IF YOU ABUSE IT – YOU WILL BE THE FIRST TO KNOW!
